About Redside Dace
The Redside Dace is a small minnow species found around the Greater Toronto Area in Canada and throughout Northeastern USA. Most people recognize the Redside Dace by its vibrant red stripe, which appears on either side of its body. In recent years, massive habitat loss and pollution have contributed to the decline of Redside Dace. Fortunately, many people are working hard to recover wild populations and prevent their extinction. Redside Dace are important because they are an indicator species, which tells us about the health of our streams. If Redside Dace are present in a stream, it signals that it is healthy. But if Redside Dace are absent, we know there is work to be done. And because of their important role, the Redside Dace would surely be missed.
